How to Measure Your Table

If you’re worried about ordering online, don’t be — our measuring instructions are just as accurate as having someone come to your home. We’ve been doing this for years, and we’ve got you covered!

At Provincial Table Pads Ltd, we know many manufacturers use the same measurements and patterns repeatedly, so we save a copy of these patterns for future use. If you know the model number underneath your table, it helps us make sure your table pad fits perfectly.

Creating a Pattern is Simple and Quick

Please note if your table requires a pattern, we will mail you out our tracing paper to make the pattern. The tracing paper will have instructions on how to create the pattern.

Lay the pattern paper over the center split of your table and make sure it’s smooth with no wrinkles.

Use tape or place heavy objects on the paper to keep it from moving around.

Trace the edge of the table by rubbing the side of a pencil or crayon along it. Be sure to only trace the flat edge—don’t include any molding or sloped areas.

Tip #1: Keep the point of the pencil facing the table, not the floor.
Tip #2: Hold the pencil as parallel as possible to the flat surface—don’t hold it upright like a rocket ship!
Note: And one more thing: never cut the pattern to make it fit into the envelope. If needed, just fold it again.

Measuring Rounded Rectangle Tables

Rounded rectangle tables don’t require patterns, but we do need you to measure the radius of the corners. This is an easy process:
  • Extend a tape measure from the edge of the table to just above where the corners start to curve, pulling it out about 10 inches.
  • Then, take a clear photo of the table and tape measure, similar to the example shown below.

Our Database of Patterns

We have thousands of table patterns on file! Simply check your table’s receipt or look underneath the table for a model number (often written in crayon). Chances are, we already have it in our records. If a pattern is needed for your table, don’t worry—we can guide you through the easy process in just a couple of minutes!

How to Measure Your Table

Measure the short side of the table first—this is the width. Focus on the flat surface only and measure to the nearest 1/16″, avoiding any beveled or sloped edges.

Next, measure the long side of the table with the leaves removed—this will be the length. Measure directly down the center, from end to end, and again, only the flat surface.

Measure the length of each extension leaf separately (refer to the image for guidance). Do not include the leaves in the overall table length.

Use a metal tape measure for the most accurate results. Avoid relying on manufacturer-provided measurements, as these often include molding or sloped edges. Patterns are required for most tables unless your table has perfectly square corners (90°) or is a true circle.

Remember not to include molding, sloped edges, or any decorative details around the perimeter in your measurements. Lastly, be sure to provide the total number of leaves and the exact length of each one.

Additional Measurement Tips

Measure the width of the table at the center split to the nearest 1/16″, focusing only on the flat surface. Avoid including beveled or sloped edges.

For the full table length, measure from end to end directly down the center, excluding the extension leaves and any sloped or beveled edges.

Always use a metal tape measure for precision.

Manufacturer-provided measurements are not reliable as they often include molding or decorative details.

If your table does not have square corners (90°) or isn’t perfectly round, a pattern will be necessary.

Be sure not to include molding, sloped edges, or extension leaves in any of your measurements.
